Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Venlafaxine
Venlafaxine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Rauvolfia Vomitoria interacts with.
Rauvolfia vomitoria contains small amounts of the drug yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear venlafaxine (Effexor). Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a bit of yohimbine, and lab studies suggest yohimbine can slow that enzyme down. If it does, venlafaxine could build up a little more than usual, nudging its effects and side effects upward. With this drug that can mean things like nausea, jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, raised blood pressure, sweating, or trouble sleeping.
I want to be honest, though: this is only theoretical, based on test-tube research, not real people. On top of that, rauvolfia itself can change blood pressure and mood, which already overlaps with how venlafaxine works. That's worth a real conversation. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.
