Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, has sympathomimetic effects and increases blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Theoretically, taking yohimbe with stimulant drugs can have additive stimulant and hypertensive effects.

Here's the gist of why these two come up together. Yohimbe winds up your sympathetic nervous system (the 'fight or flight' side), and it can nudge your blood pressure and heart rate higher. Armodafinil is a wake-promoting medication that, on its own, can also bump up blood pressure and heart rate and leave some people feeling jittery, anxious, or with a pounding heart and headache.

Stack them and those effects could add up, so you might feel more wired, jumpy, or notice your heart racing more than usual. I'll be straight with you: this concern is theoretical, based on how each works rather than strong studies. Still, since yohimbe supplements vary a lot in strength, it's worth running this combo past your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

Here's the gist for Nuvigil (armodafinil): your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medication. Lab studies hint that yohimbe may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your system could break down armodafinil a bit faster, which might leave you feeling sleepier than usual or make the medication seem like it's not working as well.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This is rated a minor interaction, and the only evidence comes from test-tube and animal research, not from people. So it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. The bigger concern with yohimbe is honestly its own side effects, like raising blood pressure and heart rate. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

What Is Armodafinil Used For?

Brand name: Nuvigil

Armodafinil tablets (including the brand Nuvigil) are used to improve wakefulness in adults who have excessive sleepiness linked to one of three conditions: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, or shift work disorder (SWD).

In obstructive sleep apnea, armodafinil treats the sleepiness itself — not the underlying airway obstruction. If CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep) is the right treatment for you, your doctor should try that first before adding armodafinil for sleepiness.
