Yohimbe and Belladonna, Caffeine, Ergotamine, Pentobarbital

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Yohimbe interacts with whole categories of medication. Belladonna, Caffeine, Ergotamine, Pentobarbital falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Yohimbe in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Why this applies to Belladonna, Caffeine, Ergotamine, Pentobarbital

Belladonna, Caffeine, Ergotamine, Pentobarbital falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, taking yohimbe with stimulant drugs can have additive effects.
Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, has sympathomimetic effects and increases blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Theoretically, taking yohimbe with stimulant drugs can have additive stimulant and hypertensive effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the piece to watch with this combination product: it contains caffeine, which is a stimulant, plus ergotamine, which can tighten blood vessels. Yohimbe works in a similar 'rev things up' direction. Its main compound, yohimbine, can raise blood pressure and speed up your heart rate. So stacking yohimbe on top of this medication could add to those effects.

In real life that might feel like a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, anxiety, or a noticeable jump in blood pressure. This is a theoretical concern based on how both work, not on hard studies, so I don't want to overstate it. Still, since blood pressure is involved, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Belladonna, Caffeine, Ergotamine, Pentobarbital also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yohimbe might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yohimbe extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

This combo product (Micomp PB) is often used for headaches, and the piece that matters here is the caffeine. Your liver clears caffeine using an enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab studies suggest yohimbe may speed that enzyme up a bit, which in theory could clear the caffeine faster and make it a little less effective. That said, this is based only on test-tube research, so it's a weak, theoretical concern, not something well proven in people.

Honestly, the bigger worry with mixing these two is overlap, not enzymes. Both yohimbe and caffeine can raise your heart rate and blood pressure, and ergotamine narrows blood vessels too. Together they could leave you jittery, racing, or with a pounding headache. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

This combination pill (Micomp PB) contains ergotamine, which your liver clears using an enzyme called CYP3A4. The concern on file is that yohimbe might speed that enzyme up a bit. If it does, your body could break down the ergotamine portion a little faster, which in theory might make this medicine work less well for headache relief. I'll be honest with you though: this idea comes only from lab and test-tube studies, not from people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

My bigger real-world worry is overlap. Yohimbe can push up blood pressure and heart rate, and so can the caffeine and ergotamine here. Please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

About Yohimbe

What is Yohimbe?

Yohimbe
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Sexual performance
  • Weight loss
  • Athletic performance

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
