Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark.
In vitro and clinical research shows that the yohimbe bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine.

Here's a quirk worth knowing if you take this birth control or hormone pill along with a yohimbe supplement. Your ethinyl estradiol can mildly slow down the same liver enzyme (CYP3A4) that your body uses to clear yohimbine, the active compound in yohimbe. In theory, that could let yohimbine build up a bit higher than expected, nudging up its known effects like a racing heart, jitteriness, anxiety, higher blood pressure, and trouble sleeping.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the two are processed, not something proven in studies, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, since over-the-counter yohimbe products vary wildly in strength and can be hard on the heart, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (Ethinyl Estradiol with Norethindrone). In lab studies only, yohimbe seems to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down estrogen. If that enzyme runs faster, hormone levels could in theory drop a bit, and lower hormone levels could mean breakthrough bleeding, spotting, or in the worst case slightly less reliable pregnancy protection.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical, test-tube finding, not something proven in real people, and it's rated minor. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since reliable contraception matters, and yohimbe carries its own risks like raising blood pressure and heart rate, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the Loestrin or Ovcon family). Both hormones in it, ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone, are cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that yohimbe may speed up that enzyme, which in theory could break the hormones down a little faster and slightly lower their levels in your body.

If that happened, the worry would be reduced protection against pregnancy, plus possible breakthrough bleeding or spotting. That said, this is weak, test-tube evidence only, not something proven in people, so I don't want to alarm you. Since these pills aren't a drug you want working less than expected, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding yohimbe.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate.
