Here's the gist of this pairing. Your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate in brands like Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Sprintec) can act as a mild blocker of an enzyme called CYP3A4. That same enzyme is what your body uses to clear yohimbine, the active compound in yohimbe. So in theory, the pill could slow that breakdown and let yohimbine build up a bit, which may make its side effects stronger, things like a racing or pounding heart, jittery anxiety, headache, and higher blood pressure.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. It's based on lab reasoning, not real-world reports, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Yohimbe can be unpredictable on its own. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before trying it.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate.
