Yohimbe and Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Yohimbe interacts with whole categories of medication. Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yohimbe in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen

Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, combining yohimbe bark with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might have additive effects; however, this has not been reported in clinical research.
Research in healthy adults shows that taking yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark, in doses of 8 mg or more, seems to inhibit platelet aggregation in vitro by binding to the alpha-2 adrenoceptor. The effects of yohimbe bark itself are unclear; yohimbe bark contains 0.6% to 1.38% yohimbine, but it is unclear how much is absorbed.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the deal with Advil Dual Action, which pairs ibuprofen with acetaminophen. The ibuprofen part already nudges your platelets toward being a little less sticky, which is one reason NSAIDs can raise the odds of bruising or stomach bleeding. Lab studies suggest yohimbine (the active piece of yohimbe) may also lightly slow platelets down, so in theory taking both together could add up a bit and tilt you toward easier bruising or, rarely, GI bleeding.

I want to be honest though: this is rated minor and is based only on test-tube and animal work, not on real-world reports. For most folks taking occasional ibuprofen, it's not a big worry. Still, if you use yohimbe regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yohimbe might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yohimbe extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

Advil Dual Action combines ibuprofen with acetaminophen, two everyday pain relievers. The concern on file is that yohimbe might speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which could in theory cause your body to clear certain medications a little faster. If that happened, you might get slightly less pain relief than expected.

Honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. The evidence is very weak (it comes from lab testing, not real people), the interaction is rated minor, and neither ibuprofen nor acetaminophen leans heavily on CYP1A2 for its main breakdown. Neither is a prodrug, so they don't need the enzyme to start working. My bigger worry with yohimbe is its own side effects, like raising your blood pressure and heart rate. Please run it by your pharmacist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen page

“Advil Dual Action pairs ibuprofen, an NSAID with built-in stomach-bleeding risk, and acetaminophen, which the liver processes, so this interaction list deserves a careful read, not a skim. Most of the entries can add to bleeding risk, while smaller clusters put extra strain on the liver or kidneys.”

About Yohimbe

What is Yohimbe?

Yohimbe
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Sexual performance
  • Weight loss
  • Athletic performance

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
