Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark.
In vitro and clinical research shows that the yohimbe bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine.

Here's the thing to know about pairing your birth control pill (like Microgynon or Ovranette) with yohimbe. Your pill isn't the one getting boosted here. Instead, the estrogen part of your pill can mildly slow down the CYP3A4 enzyme, which is the same pathway that clears yohimbine out of your body. So in theory, yohimbine could hang around a bit longer and hit harder than expected.

What that might feel like is more of yohimbe's own side effects: a racing heart, jitteriness, anxiety, or a bump in blood pressure. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs are processed, not something proven in real patients, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, given yohimbe's safety record, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist if you're on a combo birth control pill like Microgynon or Ovranette and curious about yohimbe. In some lab (test tube) studies, yohimbe seemed to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which plays a small part in clearing the estrogen portion of your pill. In theory, revving up that enzyme could lower hormone levels a bit, and lower hormone levels could mean weaker pregnancy protection or more breakthrough bleeding and spotting.

That said, this is only seen in lab dishes, not in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger concern with yohimbe is honestly its effect on blood pressure and heart rate. Before trying it, run it past your pharmacist or doctor so they can check the whole picture.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol combo). Both of these hormones get processed in your liver by an enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest yohimbe might speed that enzyme up a bit, which could clear the hormones out of your system a little faster and, in theory, make the pill slightly less reliable at preventing pregnancy.

Now, I want to keep this in perspective. This is a minor, theoretical concern based only on test-tube research, not real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since an unplanned pregnancy is a big deal, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding yohimbe. Yohimbe also raises blood pressure and heart rate on its own, which is its own reason to be cautious.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate.
