Yohimbe and Mannitol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Mannitol

Mannitol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, yohimbe might reduce the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, is an alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist and has been reported to increase blood pressure in clinical research. Theoretically, concomitant use of yohimbe and antihypertensive drugs can interfere with blood pressure control.

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: yohimbe contains yohimbine, which can push your blood pressure up by stimulating your nervous system. Many blood pressure medicines work hard to keep that number down, so taking yohimbe alongside them could work against your treatment. That's where this interaction comes from.

With mannitol, though, the fit is a little awkward. Mannitol is mostly given in a hospital or clinic by IV to pull fluid out of the body, for example to lower pressure in the brain or eyes, or inhaled (Bronchitol) for cystic fibrosis. It isn't a typical daily blood pressure pill. This concern is theoretical and based on how yohimbe behaves, not on real cases with mannitol. Still, since yohimbe can raise blood pressure on its own, check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Mannitol page

“American hellebore tops my worry list for anyone on mannitol (Osmitrol, Bronchitol), an osmotic diuretic used to draw fluid off the brain or, when inhaled, to clear mucus in cystic fibrosis. The plant's alkaloids drop blood pressure and slow the heart, a dangerous match for a drug that already shifts fluid and pressure quickly.”

About Yohimbe

What is Yohimbe?

Yohimbe
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Sexual performance
  • Weight loss
  • Athletic performance

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
