Yohimbe and Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Yohimbe interacts with whole categories of medication. Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yohimbe in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan

Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, yohimbe might reduce the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, is an alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist and has been reported to increase blood pressure in clinical research. Theoretically, concomitant use of yohimbe and antihypertensive drugs can interfere with blood pressure control.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about Byvalson: it pairs nebivolol (a beta-blocker) with valsartan to bring your blood pressure down. Yohimbe works in the opposite direction. The yohimbine in it blocks alpha-2 receptors, which can raise blood pressure and speed up your heart rate. So taking yohimbe alongside your medication could push your numbers back up and partly cancel out the very effect you're taking Byvalson for.

I'll be honest, this concern is based mainly on how yohimbe behaves in the body rather than strong studies in people on this exact combo. Still, since over-the-counter yohimbe doses vary a lot and can spike blood pressure on their own, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yohimbe might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark, inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Byvalson combines two medicines, and the one we care about here is nebivolol, a beta-blocker that your liver clears using an enzyme called CYP2D6. Lab studies hint that yohimbine, the active part of yohimbe, can slow that enzyme down. If that happens, nebivolol could build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of its effects, like a slower heartbeat, dizziness, or feeling tired or lightheaded.

There's another wrinkle: yohimbe itself tends to raise blood pressure and speed up heart rate, which works directly against what Byvalson is meant to do. Keep in mind this enzyme concern is only theoretical, based on test-tube research, not real patients. Still, given the opposing effects on blood pressure, I'd run yohimbe by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

About Yohimbe

What is Yohimbe?

Yohimbe
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Sexual performance
  • Weight loss
  • Athletic performance

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
