Here's the gist for Fycompa (perampanel): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break it down. Lab studies hint that yohimbe may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could clear perampanel a little faster, which might lower its levels and make it work less well. With a seizure medicine, the worry is reduced protection, meaning breakthrough seizures.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, not from people, so it's rated minor. On top of that, yohimbe itself can raise blood pressure and heart rate, which is reason enough to check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Here's the gist for Fycompa (perampanel). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this seizure medicine. Lab studies hint that yohimbe may speed that enzyme up, which could in theory lower perampanel levels in your blood. If that happened, the medicine might not control seizures as well as it should, which is a real concern with any anti-seizure drug.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's theoretical and rated minor. Still, with seizure control on the line, I'd rather you not gamble. Yohimbe also carries its own risks like racing heart and high blood pressure. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Perampanel

What Is Perampanel Used For?

Brand name: Fycompa

Perampanel — available as Fycompa and in generic forms — is used to treat partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain) in patients with epilepsy aged 4 years and older. Both the tablet and oral suspension forms carry this indication.

Perampanel tablets and oral suspension are also approved as add-on (adjunctive) therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures involving the whole brain at once) in patients with epilepsy aged 12 years and older. Fycompa oral suspension and tablet share both indications.
