Guarana and Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Guarana interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Guarana in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Guarana interacts with.

Theoretically, guarana may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that guarana extract can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect may be due to the caffeine in guarana, which is also reported to have antiplatelet activity. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to know about this combo: your medication already contains aspirin, which is an antiplatelet drug that makes your blood a little slower to clot. Guarana, in lab and animal studies, has shown a mild ability to keep platelets from clumping too, likely because of its caffeine. Stack the two and, in theory, you could nudge up your bleeding risk a bit, things like easier bruising, nosebleeds, or a cut that takes longer to stop.

I'll be honest with you though: this interaction has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never reported in actual people, so it's more of a caution than a red alert. One more wrinkle: your medicine also has its own caffeine, so adding a caffeinated guarana product could leave you jittery or restless. Just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

STIMULANT DRUGS

Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Guarana contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the thing to notice about this combination product: it already contains caffeine right in the formula. Guarana is basically a natural caffeine source too, so taking them together is really just stacking caffeine on top of caffeine. That extra load is what could push you into the jittery zone.

When caffeine adds up, you might feel a faster or pounding heartbeat, the shakes, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or an upset stomach. None of this is dangerous for most people, and this concern is more theoretical than proven, but it's easy to overshoot without realizing it. The aspirin and codeine parts aren't the issue here, just the caffeine doubling up. If you drink coffee or energy drinks on top of this, the effect grows. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you have heart issues or anxiety.

“Anacin with Codeine combines aspirin, caffeine, and codeine, and each of the three picks up its own supplement problems, so this is a list worth real caution. Just over half of the 398 ingredients here, 202 of them, can add to aspirin's blood-thinning action and raise bleeding risk.”

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
