Guarana and Ethanol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ALCOHOL (Ethanol)

Theoretically, alcohol might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Guarana contains caffeine. Concomitant use of alcohol can increase caffeine serum concentrations and the risk of caffeine adverse effects. Alcohol reduces caffeine metabolism.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist when you mix guarana with alcohol: guarana is basically a natural caffeine source, and your body normally clears that caffeine through the liver. Alcohol can slow that clearing down a bit, so the caffeine may hang around longer and feel a little stronger than usual.

In real life that might mean more of the classic caffeine jitters, like a racing or pounding heart, restlessness, anxiety, or trouble sleeping. There's another catch worth knowing: caffeine can make you feel more awake and mask how drunk you actually are, so you might underestimate the alcohol. To be clear, this is a theoretical interaction based on how the two behave, and it's rated minor, so it's not alarming. Still, go easy combining them, and check with your pharmacist if you have heart issues or anxiety.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethanol page

“Ethanol used as a medication is still alcohol, and its supplement list calls for real vigilance, starting with the five entries rated major. GHB is the starkest of these, since combining it with alcohol can cause serious sedation, suppressed breathing, and low blood pressure, a risk confirmed in human studies.”

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
