Why this applies to Aliskiren

Aliskiren falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.

Here's the gist with hemp and your Tekturna (aliskiren): in a lab study using hypertensive animals, hemp seed protein seemed to gently lower blood pressure, possibly by nudging some of the same blood-pressure systems your medication works on (renin is one of them). So in theory, hemp could add a little to aliskiren's blood-pressure-lowering effect.

But I want to keep this in perspective. This is very weak, early evidence, and in humans hemp seed oil hasn't actually been shown to lower blood pressure. Everyday hemp foods like seeds or oil are very unlikely to cause a problem. If you ever feel dizzy, lightheaded, or unusually tired, that could mean your pressure dipped too low, so check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Aliskiren also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.

Here's the basic idea with hemp and your blood pressure medicine, aliskiren (Tekturna). Aliskiren is processed in part by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest hemp might speed that enzyme up a little, which in theory could clear aliskiren out of your body a bit faster and make it slightly less effective. In real terms, that could mean your blood pressure isn't controlled quite as well.

I want to be honest, though: this comes only from test-tube research, not from people, and it's rated as a minor, possible concern. Everyday food amounts of hemp seeds or oil are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you take concentrated hemp supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

What Is Aliskiren Used For?

Aliskiren and Tekturna tablets are both approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like strokes and heart attacks.

Managing blood pressure is usually part of a broader plan that may also include diet changes, exercise, cholesterol control, and other medications. Many people need more than one blood pressure drug to reach their goal.
