These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Enalapril Maleate, Hydrochlorothiazide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Enalapril Maleate, Hydrochlorothiazide
Enalapril Maleate, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist with hemp and your Vaseretic (which combines enalapril, an ACE inhibitor, with hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill). In lab and animal studies, a concentrated hemp seed protein seemed to gently lower blood pressure, possibly by blocking some of the same ACE activity your enalapril already targets. So in theory, the two could add together and nudge your pressure down a little more than expected.
But I want to keep this in perspective. This is very weak evidence, the effect didn't show up in normal-pressure animals, and hemp oil hasn't lowered blood pressure in people. Eating hemp seeds in food almost certainly won't matter. If you use concentrated hemp protein and notice dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when standing, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs)
2 of 2Enalapril Maleate, Hydrochlorothiazide also falls under ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs).
Hemp seed protein hydrolysate has shown ACE inhibitor-like effects in a hypertensive animal model. However, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans. Until more is known, monitor blood pressure and potassium levels.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist: your Vaseretic combines enalapril, a blood pressure medicine that relaxes your vessels, with hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill. In a test tube and in animal studies, a concentrated hemp seed protein has shown effects similar to an ACE inhibitor. The theory is that stacking that on top of your medicine could nudge your blood pressure down a little extra, possibly causing dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when you stand up.
In real life, this is very unlikely to be a problem. Eating hemp seeds or using hemp oil as food has not been shown to lower blood pressure in people, so a sprinkle on your yogurt is fine. If you're using concentrated hemp protein supplements, just keep an eye on your readings and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Enalapril Maleate, Hydrochlorothiazide page
“If you take Vaseretic (enalapril with hydrochlorothiazide) for blood pressure, check this list carefully before adding any supplement; 11 of the 238 entries are rated major. Most run one of two ways: herbs that also drop blood pressure and can take it too low, or ones that raise it and fight the medicine.”

About Hemp
What is Hemp?
- Plant-based protein source
- Heart health support
- Skin and hair health
- Reducing inflammation
- General nutrition (omega fatty acids)
Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Enalapril and Hydrochlorothiazide
What Is Enalapril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?
Brand name: Vaseretic
Enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets — sold under brand names including Vaseretic and Enalapril maleate and hydrochlorothiazide — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). This combination is not meant as the first treatment tried; it's generally used when a single blood pressure medicine hasn't done the job on its own.
Because this is a fixed-dose combination, your doctor will typically adjust each medicine separately first, then switch you to the combination tablet once the right doses are found.
