Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pair: it's not about how kava changes the way your body handles propylthiouracil (PTU). Instead, both of these can be tough on your liver, and stacking them may add up. PTU already carries a known, though uncommon, risk of liver injury, which is why your doctor watches your liver tests. Kava has been tied to rare cases of serious liver damage too, mostly with heavy or long-term use.

Put them together and you may raise the odds of liver trouble. Watch for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, unusual tiredness, or nausea. This concern is based mostly on case reports, so it's a real caution, not a guarantee. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Propylthiouracil Used For?

Brand name: Propylthiouracil

Propylthiouracil tablets are used to treat hyperthyroidism — a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. It is specifically approved for patients with Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter who cannot tolerate methimazole and for whom surgery or radioactive iodine therapy is not a suitable option.

Propylthiouracil is also used to reduce hyperthyroid symptoms before a patient undergoes thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy) or radioactive iodine therapy, again in patients who cannot tolerate methimazole. It may also be the preferred antithyroid drug during or just before the first trimester of pregnancy.
