Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, is an alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist and has been reported to increase blood pressure in clinical research. Theoretically, concomitant use of yohimbe and antihypertensive drugs can interfere with blood pressure control.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: amlodipine works by relaxing your blood vessels so your blood pressure comes down. Yohimbe, through its active ingredient yohimbine, tends to do the opposite. It blocks certain receptors that can raise blood pressure and speed up your heart rate. So taking the two together could partly work against the very effect you're taking amlodipine for, meaning your readings might creep up or stay less controlled than your doctor wants.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how yohimbine behaves rather than strong studies in people on amlodipine. Still, since over-the-counter yohimbe doses vary a lot and can be potent, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist for amlodipine: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break it down. Some lab studies suggest yohimbe may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could clear amlodipine a little faster, which in theory might make it work less well at lowering your blood pressure or easing chest pain.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's flagged as minor and theoretical. The bigger worry with yohimbe is its own tendency to raise blood pressure and heart rate, which works against what amlodipine is doing. Before adding yohimbe, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

What Is Amlodipine Used For?

Brand name: Katerzia

Amlodipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6–17 years. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Sdamlo (oral solution) is specifically indicated for hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

Amlodipine also treats coronary artery disease in adults, including chronic stable angina (chest pain with exertion), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina, caused by coronary artery spasms), and documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
