Yohimbe and Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd

These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 4 Interactions?

Yohimbe interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Yohimbe in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

1 of 4

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd

Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, taking yohimbe with stimulant drugs can have additive effects.
Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, has sympathomimetic effects and increases blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Theoretically, taking yohimbe with stimulant drugs can have additive stimulant and hypertensive effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

The product you're asking about combines aspirin, caffeine, and Dover's powder (which contains a small amount of opium plus ipecac). The piece that matters here is the caffeine, since it acts as a stimulant. Yohimbe contains yohimbine, which revs up the same sympathetic nervous system, so stacking the two can add up. Together they could nudge your blood pressure higher and leave you feeling jittery, with a racing or pounding heartbeat, restlessness, or trouble sleeping.

This is a theoretical concern based on how both work, not something proven in studies, so I don't want to overstate it. Still, if you already deal with high blood pressure or heart issues, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

2 of 4

Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, combining yohimbe bark with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might have additive effects; however, this has not been reported in clinical research.
Research in healthy adults shows that taking yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark, in doses of 8 mg or more, seems to inhibit platelet aggregation in vitro by binding to the alpha-2 adrenoceptor. The effects of yohimbe bark itself are unclear; yohimbe bark contains 0.6% to 1.38% yohimbine, but it is unclear how much is absorbed.

This combination product already contains aspirin, which is a blood thinner that keeps your platelets from clumping together. There's a theoretical concern here: lab studies suggest the yohimbine in yohimbe bark may also make platelets a little less sticky. Stacked on top of aspirin, that could add up to a slightly higher chance of bruising or bleeding, like nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or a cut that's slow to stop.

That said, this is weak, test-tube level evidence, and it hasn't actually shown up as a problem in real people. I'd also remind you that yohimbe itself carries its own risks (it can spike your blood pressure and heart rate), and the caffeine in this product can pile onto that. Before mixing the two, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

3 of 4

Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yohimbe might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yohimbe extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

Here's the piece that matters in your combination product: the caffeine is cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Some early lab studies suggest yohimbe may speed that enzyme up, which could clear caffeine a little faster and slightly soften its effects. Honestly though, this is theoretical and based only on test-tube research, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

The bigger real-world concern is overlap, not enzymes. Both caffeine and yohimbe are stimulants, so together they can stack up effects like a racing heartbeat, jitteriness, anxiety, and higher blood pressure. That combo is what I'd actually watch for. Before pairing these, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the gist for this combo product, which mixes aspirin, caffeine, and Dover's powder (a blend that includes ipecac and opium). The concern on file is that yohimbe may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps break down certain medicines. If that happens, parts of this product could be cleared a bit faster and work a little less well, meaning slightly weaker pain relief.

Honestly though, this is very weak, theoretical evidence from lab studies only, not from people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger real-world issue is that yohimbe itself can raise your blood pressure and heart rate, and so can the caffeine here. Please run this past your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Yohimbe

What is Yohimbe?

Yohimbe
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Sexual performance
  • Weight loss
  • Athletic performance

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
