Yohimbe and Losartan Potassium

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Yohimbe interacts with whole categories of medication. Losartan Potassium falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yohimbe in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Losartan Potassium

Losartan Potassium falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, yohimbe might reduce the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, is an alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist and has been reported to increase blood pressure in clinical research. Theoretically, concomitant use of yohimbe and antihypertensive drugs can interfere with blood pressure control.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: you take losartan (Cozaar) to bring your blood pressure down, but yohimbe can push it back up. The active compound in yohimbe, yohimbine, can raise blood pressure and speed up your heart rate. So the two are working against each other, and that may weaken the blood pressure control you're counting on losartan for.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how yohimbe behaves, not solid head-to-head studies. Still, since over-the-counter yohimbe products vary a lot and can cause jitteriness, a racing heart, and higher pressure, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them. If you do take both, keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Losartan Potassium also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yohimbe might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yohimbe extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with losartan (Cozaar) and yohimbe. Lab studies suggest yohimbe may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. That's the same enzyme that helps turn losartan into its more active form, so in theory, faster processing could mean a bit less of that active piece sticking around. The practical worry would be slightly weaker blood pressure control, meaning your numbers might creep up.

That said, this is theoretical and based only on test-tube research, not real patients, so it's rated minor. Yohimbe's bigger problem here is its own tendency to raise blood pressure and speed up your heart, which works against what losartan is doing. If you're considering it, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Yohimbe

What is Yohimbe?

Yohimbe
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Sexual performance
  • Weight loss
  • Athletic performance

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
