Yohimbe + Tamoxifen Citrate
Tamoxifen Citrate brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox.
Tamoxifen Citrate falls into 2 drug categories that Yohimbe can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, yohimbe might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Yohimbe interacts with whole categories of medication. Tamoxifen Citrate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yohimbe in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Tamoxifen Citrate
Tamoxifen Citrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Yohimbe interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark, inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's a wrinkle worth knowing about. Tamoxifen is actually a prodrug, meaning your body has to convert it into its active, cancer-fighting form (called endoxifen). The main enzyme that does this conversion is CYP2D6. Lab studies suggest yohimbine, the active part of yohimbe, can block CYP2D6.
If that blocking happened in real life, it could mean less tamoxifen gets turned into its active form, which could make it work less well at protecting against breast cancer. That said, this is based only on test-tube research, not studies in people, so we honestly don't know how much it matters. Given how important tamoxifen is, I'd play it safe and run any yohimbe product by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Tamoxifen Citrate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that yohimbe extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the wrinkle with tamoxifen: it's actually a prodrug. Your body has to convert it into its active forms (like endoxifen) before it can fight breast cancer, and certain liver enzymes do that work. The lab note on file suggests yohimbe might speed up one of those enzymes (CYP3A4). In theory, a faster enzyme could shift how much active drug you end up with, which matters because tamoxifen is doing such an important job.
I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It comes only from test-tube research, not from real patients, and it's rated minor and merely possible. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I also wouldn't add yohimbe on your own. Please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first, especially since yohimbe can raise blood pressure and heart rate too.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tamoxifen Citrate page
“Tamoxifen (Nolvadex, Soltamox) often stands between a breast cancer patient and a recurrence, so the stakes on this page run higher than usual. Eleven of the 210 supplements and herbs on file carry a major rating, and those eleven deserve your attention ahead of everything else.”

About Yohimbe
What is Yohimbe?
- Erectile dysfunction
- Low sex drive
- Sexual performance
- Weight loss
- Athletic performance
Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
About Tamoxifen
What Is Tamoxifen Used For?
Brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox
Tamoxifen is used to treat estrogen receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer in both women and men, and as follow-up (adjuvant) therapy after surgery for early-stage breast cancer in women. It also reduces the occurrence of cancer in the opposite breast when used as adjuvant therapy.
In women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS — an early, non-invasive breast change) following surgery and radiation, tamoxifen lowers the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. It is also approved to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women who are at high risk but have not yet been diagnosed. Both Tamoxifen Citrate tablets and Soltamox oral solution share these indications.
