Felbamate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kava interacts with.

Combining kava with CNS depressants can have additive sedative effects.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.

Here's the simple version: both kava and felbamate can have a calming, slowing effect on your brain. Felbamate works by quieting down overactive nerve signals to control seizures, and kava acts in a similar relaxing way on the same kind of brain chemistry. When you stack them together, those effects can add up. That means you may feel more drowsy, dizzy, foggy, or unsteady on your feet than you would from either one alone, and your reflexes could slow down too.

One extra thing worth flagging: kava has been tied to rare but serious liver problems, and felbamate already carries its own liver warnings, so combining them is something to be cautious about. This isn't a reason to panic, but please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using kava with your seizure medicine.

Kava has been linked with over 100 cases of hepatotoxicity. Most cases occur with excessive and prolonged use. There is some concern that kava can adversely affect the liver, especially when used in combination with hepatotoxic drugs.

Here's the thing to know about pairing kava with felbamate: this isn't about one changing how strong the other is. Instead, both can be tough on the liver. Felbamate carries a known risk of serious liver injury (it even has a boxed warning for this), and kava has been tied to over 100 reported cases of liver damage, mostly with heavy or long-term use. Stacking two liver stressors together may raise the odds of trouble.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on scattered case reports, not strong studies. Still, watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness. Please don't change anything on your own. Loop in your doctor or pharmacist first.

About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
