Yohimbe and Aspirin, Pentazocine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Yohimbe interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Pentazocine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yohimbe in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Pentazocine

Aspirin, Pentazocine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, combining yohimbe bark with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might have additive effects; however, this has not been reported in clinical research.
Research in healthy adults shows that taking yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark, in doses of 8 mg or more, seems to inhibit platelet aggregation in vitro by binding to the alpha-2 adrenoceptor. The effects of yohimbe bark itself are unclear; yohimbe bark contains 0.6% to 1.38% yohimbine, but it is unclear how much is absorbed.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the simple version for Talwin Compound, which pairs the painkiller pentazocine with aspirin. The aspirin part already makes your platelets (the cells that help blood clot) a little less sticky. Lab studies suggest yohimbine, the active compound in yohimbe, can also slow platelets down a bit. Put them together and, in theory, you might bruise or bleed a touch more easily, or notice cuts taking longer to stop.

I want to be honest though: this is based only on test-tube and animal work, and it has never actually been seen as a problem in real people taking these together. So it's more of a 'good to know' than a red flag. Since yohimbe can also spike your blood pressure and heart rate on its own, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Aspirin, Pentazocine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yohimbe might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yohimbe extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

If you take Talwin Compound (the pentazocine plus aspirin combo) and you're curious about adding yohimbe, here's the honest picture. Lab research hints that yohimbe might speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps process pentazocine. In theory, a faster enzyme could clear the pentazocine a little quicker, meaning your pain relief might not feel quite as strong or last as long.

I want to be clear though: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube studies, not on real people. It's rated minor for a reason. What I'd worry about more is yohimbe itself, which can spike your blood pressure and heart rate. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page

“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”

About Yohimbe

What is Yohimbe?

Yohimbe
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Sexual performance
  • Weight loss
  • Athletic performance

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
