Kava and Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Kava interacts with whole categories of medication. Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Kava in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate

Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Kava interacts with.

It is unclear if kava inhibits CYP1A2; research is conflicting.
Although in vitro research and a case report suggest that kava inhibits CYP1A2, more robust clinical evidence shows that kava has no effect on CYP1A2. In a clinical study in healthy volunteers, taking kava 1000 mg twice daily (containing a daily dose of 138 mg kavalactones) for 28 days had no effect on CYP1A2 activity.

Here's the gist with kava and caffeine (the sodium benzoate part is just there to help the caffeine dissolve). Caffeine is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. There was some early lab and case-report concern that kava might slow that enzyme down, which in theory could let caffeine linger and add to jittery effects like a racing heart, restlessness, or trouble sleeping.

The good news: a better human study found kava had no real effect on this enzyme, so this interaction is rated minor and unlikely. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. That said, both kava and caffeine work on the nervous system in opposite ways, so if you ever feel off, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

It is unclear if kava inhibits CYP3AA; research is conflicting.
Although in vitro research suggests that kava inhibits CYP3A4, more robust clinical evidence shows that kava has no effect on CYP3A4. In a clinical study in healthy volunteers, taking kava 1000 mg twice daily (containing a daily dose of 138 mg kavalactones) for 28 days had no effect on CYP3A4 activity.

Here's the good news on combining kava with this caffeine product: the worry on paper was that kava might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which could let some medicines build up. But when researchers actually tested this in people taking kava for 28 days, they found no real effect on CYP3A4. So this particular interaction is rated minor and unlikely.

I'd be honest that caffeine isn't even mainly cleared by CYP3A4 (your body handles it through a different enzyme), so kava isn't likely to stack up your caffeine levels. The bigger thing to keep in mind is that kava calms you down while caffeine wakes you up, so they somewhat work against each other. If you have any liver concerns, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using kava.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate page

“Caffeine and sodium benzoate is itself a stimulant medication, so the supplements most likely to cause trouble are the ones doing the same job. Seven of the 208 ingredients on file rate major, several of them stimulant herbs such as ephedra that can pile extra blood pressure and heart strain onto a drug already revving the nervous system.”

Kava is a Pacific Island plant traditionally used to promote relaxation and ease anxiety, and some studies suggest it may help mild anxiety.
