Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Kava interacts with.

It is unclear if kava inhibits P-glycoprotein (P-gp); research is conflicting.
In vitro research shows that kava can inhibit P-gp efflux. However, a clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking kava standardized to provide 225 mg kavalactones daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of digoxin, a P-gp substrate. It is possible that the use of other P-gp substrates or higher doses of kava might still inhibit P-gp.

Here's the honest picture with your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel in Logynon or Microgynon) and kava. The concern is that kava might block a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs in and out of cells. In theory, slowing that pump could nudge hormone levels in your body. But this is mostly based on lab dish studies, and a human study using a standardized kava dose didn't change blood levels of digoxin, another drug that relies on this same pump.

So for now this is a theoretical, weak-evidence concern rather than a proven problem. Bigger kava doses might matter more. I'd flag a separate point too: kava has been tied to rare liver harm, and the pill is processed by the liver, so please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Although in vitro research and a case report suggest that kava inhibits CYP1A2, more robust clinical evidence shows that kava has no effect on CYP1A2. In a clinical study in healthy volunteers, taking kava 1000 mg twice daily (containing a daily dose of 138 mg kavalactones) for 28 days had no effect on CYP1A2 activity.

Here's the honest answer on combining kava with your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo in Logynon and Microgynon): the worry on paper is that kava might block an enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps process the estrogen part. If that were true, estrogen levels could nudge up a little, possibly meaning more of the usual side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, or bloating.

But the better-quality research is reassuring. In a real study, people took kava for 28 days and it did not meaningfully change CYP1A2 activity. So this interaction is rated minor and unlikely. The bigger reason to be careful with kava is its rare risk of liver harm, so always run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Good news here: this is a pretty low-concern pairing. Your birth control pill (the estrogen and progestin combo in Logynon or Microgynon) is broken down partly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Early lab dish studies hinted that kava might block that enzyme, which in theory could let hormone levels build up a little. But when researchers actually tested this in real people taking kava for 28 days, they found no meaningful effect on CYP3A4.

So in practice, kava is unlikely to change how well your pill works or cause extra side effects. My bigger caution with kava is its rare link to liver damage, not this hormone interaction. If you take kava regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, especially about your liver.
