Why this applies to Glipizide, Metformin

Glipizide, Metformin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Kava interacts with.

Theoretically, kava might increase levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that kava significantly inhibits CYP2C9 enzymes. This effect has not yet been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with your Metaglip, which combines glipizide and metformin. The glipizide part gets cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In test-tube studies, kava appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, glipizide could build up and push your blood sugar lower than intended. The main thing to watch for would be low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or sudden hunger.

That said, this is only seen in the lab, not in actual people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Kava also carries its own real risk of liver harm, which matters anytime you're on regular medication. Before mixing the two, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.
