Indinavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark.
In vitro and clinical research shows that the yohimbe bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine.

Here's the thing to know about pairing yohimbe with indinavir (Crixivan). Indinavir is a strong blocker of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and that same enzyme is what your body uses to clear yohimbine, the active part of yohimbe. So with indinavir on board, yohimbine may not break down as fast and could build up to higher levels than usual.

In practical terms, that means a bigger chance of yohimbe's typical side effects, like a racing heart, jitteriness, anxiety, and elevated blood pressure. To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs behave, not on reported cases, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, given how unpredictable over-the-counter yohimbe products are, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist for indinavir (Crixivan): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to process this HIV medicine. Some lab studies suggest yohimbe may speed that enzyme up. In theory, that could clear indinavir out of your body a little faster, which might lower the drug levels in your blood. With an HIV medication, weaker levels are a real concern because the goal is to keep the virus fully suppressed.

That said, this is theoretical and only comes from test-tube research, so we really don't know how much (if at all) it matters in people. Yohimbe also carries its own risks, like raising blood pressure and heart rate. Please don't change anything on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these two.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

What Is Indinavir Used For?

  • Indinavir is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Indinavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although indinavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people.
