Hemp and Abrocitinib

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Abrocitinib

Abrocitinib falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture for hemp and abrocitinib (Cibinqo). The interaction we have on file is really about hemp's theoretical tendency to thin the blood a little and slow platelets down. This matters most for blood thinners, and abrocitinib isn't a classic anticoagulant. That said, abrocitinib can lower your platelet count on its own as part of how it quiets the immune system, so anything that nudges platelets in the same direction is worth keeping in mind.

The good news: the evidence here is weak. The platelet effect only showed up in animal and lab studies, and one human study using hemp seed oil found no real change. Food amounts of hemp seeds are very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you notice easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Abrocitinib page

“Bleeding is where I'd focus first with abrocitinib (Cibinqo), an eczema pill that can itself lower platelet counts. Of the 290 supplements and herbs with an interaction on file, 202 have blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity, and two of the three major-rated entries, danshen and piracetam, sit in that group.”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
