Why this applies to Treprostinil

Treprostinil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.

Here's the gist for Treprostinil (Orenitram), which doctors use to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension by relaxing and widening your blood vessels. The concern on file is purely theoretical: in a lab and animal study, concentrated hemp seed protein appeared to nudge blood pressure down a bit. Since Treprostinil already lowers blood pressure in the lungs and can drop it elsewhere too, there's a thought that the two together might add up.

In real life, this is rated minor and unlikely. Eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as food almost certainly won't matter, and hemp oil didn't lower blood pressure in human studies. Still, if you ever feel dizzy, lightheaded, or flushed, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Treprostinil also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.

Here's the thing about pairing hemp with treprostinil (Orenitram): this medicine, used for pulmonary arterial hypertension, already affects platelets and can slow down clotting on its own. The theory is that hemp seed might also nudge platelets to clump less, so stacking the two could, in theory, raise your bleeding risk a little. Think easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.

But I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes only from lab and animal studies. In actual human research, hemp seed oil at 2 grams daily for 12 weeks did not change platelet activity. Everyday food amounts of hemp seeds are very unlikely to matter. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before starting concentrated hemp supplements.

About Treprostinil

What Is Treprostinil Used For?

Treprostinil treats pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH; WHO Group 1) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. Depending on the product and route, it is used to improve exercise ability, delay disease progression, or reduce symptoms tied to physical activity. Remodulin and treprostinil injection products are also indicated for patients who need to transition away from another PAH medicine called epoprostenol.

Tyvaso, Tyvaso DPI, and Yutrepia (inhaled forms) are additionally approved to treat pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD; WHO Group 3) — lung-pressure problems caused by scarring or inflammation in the lung tissue itself. Orenitram (extended-release oral tablet) is specifically indicated to delay disease progression and improve exercise capacity in PAH.
