Zonisamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the short version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down zonisamide, and lab studies suggest hemp may speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in real life, your body could clear zonisamide a little faster, which in theory might lower its level and make it work less well at controlling seizures.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This concern comes only from test-tube research, not from studies in people, and it's rated a minor, possible interaction. Hemp seeds and hemp oil as food are very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor, and never adjust your seizure medicine on your own.

What Is Zonisamide Used For?

Brand names: Zonegran, Zonisade

Zonisamide is used as add-on therapy — meaning it is combined with other seizure medications, not used alone — to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) in adults with epilepsy. Zonegran (capsule) and generic zonisamide capsules are approved for adults with epilepsy.

Zonisade (oral suspension) is approved as add-on therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and in patients 16 years of age and older.
