Hemp + Ticagrelor
Ticagrelor brand name: Brilinta.
Ticagrelor falls into 2 drug categories that Hemp can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Ticagrelor falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Ticagrelor
Ticagrelor falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: Brilinta (ticagrelor) already works hard to keep your platelets from clumping together, which is exactly how it prevents clots after a heart attack or stent. Hemp seed has been looked at for a possible similar, very mild effect on platelets. The worry on paper is that stacking the two could add up and nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.
But the evidence here is thin. The only signal came from an animal and lab study using a hemp-heavy diet. When actual people took 2 grams of hemp seed oil daily for 12 weeks, it did not change platelet activity. So eating hemp seeds as food is very unlikely to matter. If you're considering a concentrated hemp supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and watch for easy bruising or bleeding that's slow to stop.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Ticagrelor also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Brilinta (ticagrelor): your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to process this blood thinner. Lab studies suggest hemp might speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in real life, your ticagrelor could be cleared faster, which in theory means a little less clot protection, the very thing you're taking it for after a heart attack, stent, or stroke.
That said, this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Eating hemp seeds or oil as food is very unlikely to matter. Just don't stop or change your Brilinta on your own. If you want to use concentrated hemp supplements regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Danshen (major), Grapefruit (major), Piracetam (major) and St. John's Wort (major).
By severity: 5 major · 241 moderate · 40 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ticagrelor page
“Grapefruit sits at the top of this list for good reason. Ticagrelor (Brilinta) is cleared by the CYP3A4 enzyme, and grapefruit blocks that enzyme, so drug levels can climb and bleeding becomes more likely.”

About Hemp
What is Hemp?
- Plant-based protein source
- Heart health support
- Skin and hair health
- Reducing inflammation
- General nutrition (omega fatty acids)
Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Ticagrelor
What Is Ticagrelor Used For?
Brand name: Brilinta
Ticagrelor tablets are used to lower the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack (myocardial infarction), and stroke in adults who have had acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — a group of conditions including unstable angina and heart attack — or who have a history of heart attack. It also reduces the risk of stent thrombosis (a blood clot forming in a coronary stent) in people who have been stented for ACS treatment.
Ticagrelor tablets are also used in people with coronary artery disease (CAD) who are at high risk for a first heart attack or stroke, particularly those with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, Brilinta is approved to reduce the risk of stroke in adults with a mild acute ischemic stroke or a high-risk transient ischemic attack (TIA, or "mini-stroke").
