Vilazodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Lentinan interacts with.

Laboratory research suggests that lentinan might increase the activity of cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19 in patients taking lentinan.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C19 include proton pump inhibitors including omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), and pantoprazole (Protonix); diazepam (Valium); carisoprodol (Soma); nelfinavir (Viracept); and others.

Here's the gist for Viibryd (vilazodone). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to help break it down. Lab and animal research hints that lentinan may speed that enzyme up. If it did the same in people, vilazodone could clear out a little faster, which might leave less of it in your system and make it work less well for your depression. Vilazodone is not a prodrug, so faster breakdown means a weaker effect, not a stronger one.

Keep this in perspective. This is only test-tube and animal data, and it has never actually been reported in humans, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if your mood symptoms creep back after starting lentinan, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include tricyclic antidepressants such as imipramine (Tofranil) and amitriptyline (Elavil); antipsychotics such as haloperidol (Haldol), risperidone (Risperdal), and chlorpromazine (Thorazine); beta-blockers such as propranolol (Inderal), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), and carvedilol (Coreg); tamoxifen (Nolvadex); and others.

Here's the gist for Viibryd (vilazodone) and lentinan. Lentinan is a shiitake mushroom extract, and in early lab work it appears to speed up an enzyme called CYP2D6, which is one pathway your body uses to break down certain medicines. If that happened with vilazodone, the worry would be that your body clears it a little faster, leaving slightly less in your system and possibly making it work less well for your depression.

I'd keep this in perspective, though. This signal comes only from test-tube and animal studies, and it has not been seen in real people. Vilazodone also leans more on a different enzyme (CYP3A4), so any CYP2D6 effect is likely small. Still, if your mood seems to slip after adding lentinan, check in with your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Laboratory research suggests that lentinan might increase the activity of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking lentinan.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

MDD is more than just feeling sad; it's a clinical condition involving persistent low mood, loss of interest, and other symptoms that significantly affect daily life.

Vilazodone is not approved for use in children or teenagers. Its safety and effectiveness have not been established in pediatric patients.
