Dronedarone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of CYP1A2 inhibitors and yerba mate might increase levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.

Here's the thing to know with Multaq (dronedarone) and yerba mate: the concern isn't really about your heart medicine changing. Instead, dronedarone can gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme your body uses to clear out caffeine. Since yerba mate is naturally caffeinated, that caffeine may hang around a little longer than usual.

In plain terms, you might feel the caffeine more strongly: think jitteriness, a faster or fluttery heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. That last part matters a bit more here, since you're taking dronedarone to keep your heart rhythm steady. This is a theoretical, lab-based interaction, so it's usually mild and dose-related. A cup or two is likely fine, but check with your pharmacist if you drink a lot.

Here's the short version on pairing yerba mate with dronedarone (Multaq). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear dronedarone out of your system. Lab-dish studies suggest yerba mate can slow that enzyme down a bit, which could let dronedarone build up a little higher than usual.

If that happened, you might notice more of the drug's typical effects, like nausea, stomach upset, tiredness, or a slower heart rate. I want to be straight with you, though: this is theoretical and only based on test-tube work, not real people, so it's rated minor. Casual mate drinking is far less likely to matter than concentrated supplement doses. Since dronedarone is a heart-rhythm drug, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding regular mate.

About Dronedarone

What Is Dronedarone Used For?

Brand name: Multaq

Multaq (dronedarone) tablets are used to reduce the risk of being hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) — an irregular, often rapid heart rhythm. It is approved for adults who are currently in normal sinus rhythm but have a history of paroxysmal (comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation.

Multaq is not appropriate for everyone with AF. It must not be used in people with permanent atrial fibrillation or in those with recently worsened heart failure requiring hospitalization — these patients face a doubled risk of death, stroke, and hospitalization if they take it.
