In vitro evidence shows that red clover inhibits CYP1A2. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version: this is a very low-concern pairing. The idea is that red clover might block an enzyme called CYP1A2, and if a drug leans on that enzyme to be cleared, blocking it could let the drug build up. With tipranavir, that could in theory mean more of the usual side effects, like nausea, diarrhea, or upset liver readings.
But the real-world evidence is reassuring. This concern comes only from lab dish studies, and an actual human study found red clover isoflavones did not change how the body handled a CYP1A2 test drug. Tipranavir is also handled mostly by other liver enzymes, so CYP1A2 isn't its main exit route. Bottom line: an interaction is unlikely. Still, since you're managing HIV, keep your pharmacist or doctor in the loop before adding red clover.

In vitro evidence suggests that red clover weakly inhibits CYP2C19. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version: red clover has only shown a weak ability to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 in test-tube studies. Tipranavir (Aptivus) is partly handled by that enzyme, so in theory, blocking it a little could let tipranavir build up slightly. If that happened, you might notice more of its usual side effects, like nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, or tiredness.
But I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from lab work only and has never actually been seen in real people, so I'd put this low on your worry list. Remember too that tipranavir is always taken with ritonavir, which is a much stronger player in this enzyme system. Still, since HIV treatment is so important to keep steady, please run any red clover use past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the short version: this is a very weak, mostly theoretical concern. In a test tube, red clover's plant estrogens looked like they might slow down an enzyme called CYP2C9, which helps your body process certain medicines. If that happened, levels of an affected drug could creep up. With tipranavir, that could in theory mean a bit more of the usual side effects, like stomach upset, diarrhea, rash, or changes in your liver labs.
But here's the reassuring part: an actual human study using standardized red clover isoflavones found no real effect on a CYP2C9 test drug. Tipranavir is also already taken with ritonavir, which has a much bigger say in its levels. Still, since your HIV treatment matters, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding red clover.

What Is Tipranavir Used For?
Brand name: Aptivus
Aptivus (tipranavir) is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in pediatric patients weighing at least 36 kg (about 79 lbs). It is specifically for people who have already tried other HIV treatments and whose virus has become resistant to more than one protease inhibitor. It is always taken together with a low dose of ritonavir and with other HIV medications.
Aptivus is not recommended for people who have never taken HIV treatment before (treatment-naïve patients). Using tipranavir alongside additional active HIV drugs improves the chances of it working well.
