Here's the gist for your imipramine (Tofranil). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break this medicine down. In lab and test-tube studies, bacopa seems to slow that same enzyme a bit. If that happened in your body, imipramine could clear out a little slower and build up, which might bump up its typical side effects like drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness when standing, or a faster heartbeat.

The good news: this is theoretical, and the studies actually disagree with each other, so it may not matter much in real life. Still, imipramine is a drug where extra effects aren't trivial. Before adding a bacopa supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist with bacopa and imipramine (Tofranil). Imipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant, and part of how it works includes blocking acetylcholine, which is what gives it those familiar side effects like dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, and drowsiness. Bacopa appears to do the opposite in lab settings, gently nudging acetylcholine levels up. So in theory, the two could partly cancel each other out.

What might that look like in real life? Possibly slightly less benefit from your imipramine, or bacopa not doing much either. Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on how these work, not something proven in people, so I wouldn't panic. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads up before adding bacopa so they can keep an eye on how you're doing.

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. What Is Imipramine Used For?

Brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM

Imipramine is used to relieve symptoms of depression. Both Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets and Imipramine Pamoate capsules are approved for this use. Endogenous depression — the kind that seems to arise from within rather than a clear outside cause — tends to respond especially well. It may take one to three weeks before you notice the full benefit.

Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets are also approved as a short-term, add-on treatment to help reduce nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children aged 6 and older, after a doctor has ruled out physical causes.
