Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Miconazole, Zinc Oxide, Petrolatum
Miconazole, Zinc Oxide, Petrolatum falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Good news here: Vusion is a topical ointment made of miconazole, zinc oxide, and petrolatum that you smooth onto a baby's diaper-rash area. The interaction on file is about Danshen changing how the liver and gut enzyme CYP3A4 handles certain medicines taken by mouth. Because Vusion stays on the skin and very little of it gets into the bloodstream, that enzyme effect really doesn't come into play here.
In plain terms, taking Danshen is very unlikely to change how this cream works on the skin or cause extra side effects from it. The main thing to watch with Vusion itself is mild skin irritation. Still, since Danshen can affect bleeding and other medicines, it's smart to run it by your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
