Why this applies to Tinidazole

Tinidazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the gist for tinidazole (Tindamax): your liver and gut use an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process it. Danshen can affect that same enzyme. The tricky part is that danshen acts in two different ways. Taken steadily for a couple of weeks, it tends to speed CYP3A4 up, which could clear tinidazole faster and possibly leave less in your body to fully knock out the infection. A single dose, oddly, may briefly do the opposite and raise levels.

Tinidazole is not a prodrug, so faster clearance simply means a weaker punch against your infection, which matters since you usually take it for a short, defined course. This is based on limited human research, so don't panic, but do run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Tinidazole Used For?

Brand name: Tindamax

Tinidazole tablets treat four types of infections: trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection), giardiasis (a parasitic gut infection), amebiasis (including intestinal infection and amebic liver abscess), and bacterial vaginosis (a vaginal bacterial imbalance). Treatment of giardiasis and amebiasis is approved for adults and children older than three years of age. Bacterial vaginosis is an approved use in adult women.

Because trichomoniasis is sexually transmitted, sexual partners must be treated at the same time to prevent re-infection. Tinidazole should only be used for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial or parasitic infections — using it unnecessarily can contribute to antibiotic resistance.
