Benzthiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, taking danshen with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that danshen can produce dose-dependent hypotensive effects. Furthermore, concomitant use with captopril appears to potentiate this effect.

Benzthiazide (Exna) is a thiazide-type water pill that lowers blood pressure by helping your body get rid of extra salt and fluid. Danshen, on the other hand, may have its own mild blood-pressure-lowering action based on lab and animal studies. So the concern here is simple math: if you stack one blood pressure lowering effect on top of another, the two together could push your pressure down a little too far.

If that happens, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or woozy when you stand up quickly. I'll be honest with you though, this is a theoretical interaction graded on animal data, not strong human studies, so it's far from guaranteed. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Danshen, especially when you first start it.
