Celecoxib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Celebrex (celecoxib). Your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear this drug from your body. In lab and animal studies, compounds in Danshen appear to slow that same enzyme down. If that happens in real life, celecoxib could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which may nudge up the usual NSAID side effects, things like stomach upset, heartburn, fluid retention, raised blood pressure, or a small added risk of stomach irritation.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. So far it's only been seen in test-tube and animal research, never confirmed in people, so it's theoretical. Still, since both can affect the stomach and clotting, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Celecoxib Used For?

Brand names: Celebrex, Elyxyb

Celecoxib capsules and the generic oral suspension treat the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) in children 2 years and older. Celecoxib capsules also treat acute pain and primary dysmenorrhea (painful periods) in adults.

ELYXYB (celecoxib oral liquid) is specifically approved for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults — but it is not used to prevent migraines. VYSCOXA (celecoxib oral suspension) is not indicated for acute pain or primary dysmenorrhea.
