Danshen might alter the levels of drugs cleared by p-glycoprotein.
Pharmacokinetic research in healthy volunteers suggests that danshen might affect p-glycoprotein activity. Taking danshen extract 1 gram three times daily for 10 days prior to receiving fexofenadine 60 mg increases peak levels of fexofenadine, a p-glycoprotein substrate, by 27.4% and area under the curve (AUC) by 37.2%.

Here's the gist for demeclocycline: this antibiotic is moved around your body partly by a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which acts like a little pump that helps push the drug back out. Danshen may slow that pump down. When that happens, a bit more demeclocycline can hang around in your bloodstream than expected.

In practice, that could mean a slightly stronger drug effect and a higher chance of the usual side effects, like nausea, an upset stomach, diarrhea, or more sensitivity to sunburn. This isn't a dangerous, life-threatening combo, and the evidence comes from a small study using a different drug, so it's only a possible concern. Still, since concentrated danshen supplements are stronger than casual amounts, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Demeclocycline

What Is Demeclocycline Used For?

Brand name: Declomycin

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride tablets are used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. These include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, tick fevers, respiratory tract infections (including those caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae), cholera, plague, tularemia, brucellosis, relapsing fever, chancroid, and sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum, nongonococcal urethritis, and gonorrhea (when penicillin cannot be used).

It is also used for certain skin and skin structure infections, bartonellosis, granuloma inguinale, actinomycosis, listeriosis, anthrax (when penicillin is contraindicated), and as an adjunct in acute intestinal amebiasis. In severe acne, it may be used as part of combination therapy. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it.
