Theoretically, taking danshen with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that danshen can produce dose-dependent hypotensive effects. Furthermore, concomitant use with captopril appears to potentiate this effect.

Here's the short version: triamterene is a water pill that helps your body shed extra fluid, and along the way it can nudge your blood pressure down. Danshen, on its own, has shown blood pressure lowering effects in animal studies. So if you pair the two, the worry is that your blood pressure could drop a little further than expected.

I want to be honest about the evidence here. This is theoretical, mostly from lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you notice dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when you stand up, that's worth paying attention to. Triamterene doesn't waste potassium like other water pills, so that part isn't the concern. Before adding Danshen, just have a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Triamterene Used For?

Brand name: Dyrenium

Triamterene capsules are used to treat edema — excess fluid buildup in the body — linked to several conditions, including congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and nephrotic syndrome (a kidney disorder causing protein loss and swelling). It is also used for steroid-induced edema, idiopathic edema (fluid retention with no clear cause), and edema due to secondary hyperaldosteronism (overproduction of a hormone that causes the body to hold onto sodium and water).

It can be used on its own or alongside other diuretics, either to boost fluid removal or to help preserve potassium levels. Both Dyrenium and Triamterene capsules share the same approved uses as described above.
