Hemp and Ramelteon

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Ramelteon falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ramelteon

Ramelteon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist with hemp and Rozerem (ramelteon). Your body relies heavily on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear ramelteon, and lab research suggests hemp may rev that enzyme up a bit. If it does, your body could break down ramelteon faster than usual, which might leave less of it working. In plain terms, your sleep aid could feel a little weaker, and you may find it harder to drift off.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern comes only from test-tube research, not from real people, so it's more theoretical than proven. Everyday hemp seeds or hemp oil in food are unlikely to cause trouble. If you take concentrated hemp supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Ramelteon also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Rozerem (ramelteon): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this sleep aid out of your system. Lab studies suggest hemp may speed up that enzyme. If it does, your body could break down ramelteon a little faster, which in theory might make it slightly less effective at helping you drift off to sleep.

I want to be honest about how thin this is. The signal comes only from test-tube research, not from real people taking both together, and it's rated as a minor interaction. Food amounts of hemp seeds or hemp oil are very unlikely to matter. If you take ramelteon nightly and notice it's not working as well, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

“Ramelteon (Rozerem) is a prescription sleep aid, and its 228 interacting supplements call for real care, starting with the nine rated major. The frustrating part is that the things sleepless people typically reach for, kava, CBD, a glass of wine before bed, sit at the heart of the problem.”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
