Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that danshen tincture and various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP1A2. However, this activity has not been shown in humans when theophylline, a CYP1A2 substrate, was used as a target drug.

Beyaz is a birth control pill that combines drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol with a folate (levomefolate). The concern here is small and mostly theoretical. In lab tests, danshen seems to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which plays a part in processing the estrogen in this pill. If that enzyme were blocked in your body, estrogen levels could nudge upward, which in theory might mean more estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.

Here is the reassuring part: when researchers tested danshen in actual people using a different CYP1A2 drug, they did not see this effect. So real-world impact is uncertain and likely minor. Still, because danshen can also affect blood clotting, it is worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Pharmacokinetic research in healthy volunteers suggests that danshen might affect p-glycoprotein activity. Taking danshen extract 1 gram three times daily for 10 days prior to receiving fexofenadine 60 mg increases peak levels of fexofenadine, a p-glycoprotein substrate, by 27.4% and area under the curve (AUC) by 37.2%.

Beyaz is a birth control pill that combines drospirenone, ethinyl estradiol, and a folate. Some of these hormones are moved around your body with help from a transporter called P-glycoprotein. Danshen may slow that transporter down a bit. In a small study, danshen raised levels of another P-glycoprotein drug by roughly a third. So in theory, danshen could nudge your hormone levels slightly higher.

For you, that mostly means a chance of more typical pill side effects, like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or mood changes. This is based on limited, lower-quality research, so it is more of a heads-up than a red alert. Before adding danshen, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can weigh it for your situation.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Beyaz is a birth control pill, and the estrogen part (ethinyl estradiol) is broken down by a liver and gut enzyme called CYP3A4. Here's the catch with Danshen: when taken regularly for a week or two, it appears to speed up that enzyme. That means your body could clear the hormones faster, leaving lower levels in your blood. For a contraceptive, lower hormone levels can mean weaker protection against pregnancy and more breakthrough bleeding or spotting.

This is based on early human research using a different test drug, so it's not a sure thing, but it's worth taking seriously since reliable birth control matters. Please don't stop either one on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor, and ask whether a backup method makes sense if you use Danshen.
