Why this applies to Nateglinide

Nateglinide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear out nateglinide. Lab studies suggest that compounds in Danshen can slow that enzyme down. If that happens, more nateglinide could linger in your bloodstream than usual, which may push its blood-sugar-lowering effect a little harder than expected.

In practice, that could mean a higher chance of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), with signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or sudden hunger. I want to be honest, though: this is only seen in test-tube research so far and hasn't actually been reported in people, so it's more of a theoretical caution. Since Danshen can also affect blood clotting, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Nateglinide tablets are used to help improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is always used together with diet and exercise — not as a replacement for them.

Nateglinide is not for type 1 diabetes, and it is not used to treat diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where the blood becomes dangerously acidic).
