Telmisartan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, taking danshen with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that danshen can produce dose-dependent hypotensive effects. Furthermore, concomitant use with captopril appears to potentiate this effect.

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you're taking telmisartan (Micardis) for blood pressure and thinking about adding Danshen. Danshen may have its own mild blood pressure lowering effect, at least based on animal studies. Stack that on top of telmisartan, which already relaxes your blood vessels, and the two could push your pressure down a little too far.

If that happens, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially when you stand up quickly. To be clear, this is mostly theoretical and comes from lab and animal data, not solid human trials, so it's no reason to panic. Telmisartan isn't a prodrug, so this is simply two blood-pressure-lowering effects adding up. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and keep an eye on your readings.

What Is Telmisartan Used For?

Brand name: Micardis

Telmisartan tablets — sold as Micardis and the generic telmisartan — treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Bringing blood pressure down lowers the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Micardis and telmisartan tablets are also approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes in patients 55 or older who are at high cardiovascular risk and cannot take ACE inhibitors. This use is for patients with a history of conditions such as coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, TIA (mini-stroke), or high-risk diabetes with signs of organ damage.
