Why this applies to Lansoprazole

Lansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the short version: Danshen may nudge the enzyme (CYP3A4) that helps your body process lansoprazole. Taken for a couple of weeks, Danshen seems to speed that enzyme up, which could lower lansoprazole levels and make it work a little less well. In real life, that might mean your heartburn or reflux symptoms creep back, or an ulcer heals more slowly. Interestingly, a single dose of Danshen does the opposite and briefly raises levels.

The bigger concern with Danshen here is that it can also thin the blood. Since this is based on limited research, I wouldn't panic, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Lansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Prevacid

Lansoprazole is prescribed for a range of conditions where excess stomach acid is the problem. It treats active stomach and duodenal ulcers (sores in the stomach or upper small intestine), helps heal ulcers caused by NSAID pain relievers, and can reduce the risk of those ulcers coming back.

It's also used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (acid damage to the esophagus), and rare conditions where the stomach makes far too much acid — like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. When combined with antibiotics, it helps wipe out H. pylori bacteria that cause recurring ulcers.
