Wheatgrass Drug Interactions, Uses, Effectiveness, Safety & More
What is this page for?
First and foremost: how Wheatgrass interacts with medications. The heart of this page is the interaction list — every drug Wheatgrass is known to interact with, and how serious each one is.
But these pages have grown well beyond that into a full monograph — what Wheatgrass is, what people use it for and how strong the evidence is, its safety and side effects, and answers to the questions we’re asked most — written and reviewed by the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases, not medical advice, and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Add one medicationWheatgrass Drug Interactions: The Bottom Line
From the HelloPharmacist Editorial Team · Updated July 2026Based on the available evidence, the overall risk of a clinically significant Wheatgrass drug interaction appears low for most people, because every reported interaction is theoretical rather than proven in humans. None of the listed interactions are rated major, and all of them rest on animal or lab research only, not on human studies.
The combination most worth watching involves diabetes medications. Animal research suggests wheatgrass may prompt the body to release more insulin and lower blood sugar, so adding it could, in theory, increase the chance of low blood sugar in people whose glucose is tightly managed. Wheatgrass may also speed up an enzyme the liver uses to clear certain medications, which could make those medicines slightly less effective, though this has only been seen in lab studies.
The long list of medications comes almost entirely from that one enzyme effect, so a large number does not mean many separate dangers. Most of these combinations have never been shown to cause meaningful changes in people, and the concerns remain predictions rather than documented problems.
Based on HelloPharmacist’s Wheatgrass interaction data and reviewed under our editorial standards.

Severity — How Serious It Can Be
- Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
- Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
- Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
- No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.
Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented
- Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
- Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
- Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Wheatgrass: Uses, Safety & Side Effects
Wheatgrass is the young grass of the wheat plant, taken as a juice or powder, and is mainly used as a concentrated source of vitamins and plant nutrients. Solid scientific evidence for most health claims is limited, and it is best viewed as a nutritional add-on rather than a treatment. It is generally well tolerated, but people with celiac disease, wheat allergy, or who are pregnant should be cautious and check with a healthcare provider.

Overview
Wheatgrass is the young, green grass of the common wheat plant, Triticum aestivum. It is harvested while the grass is still very young and tender, before the plant forms grain. It can be grown indoors in trays or on farms in many parts of the world.
People most often take wheatgrass as a fresh-squeezed juice, a dried powder, or in tablet and capsule form. The powder is popular because it can be stirred into water, juice, or smoothies. Wheatgrass is marketed as a "superfood" and a concentrated source of vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, and plant antioxidants.
How it works
Wheatgrass contains chlorophyll, vitamins (such as some B vitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin K), minerals, amino acids, and various plant antioxidants. Supporters believe these compounds give it antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
In laboratory and animal research, antioxidant plant compounds may help neutralize unstable molecules called free radicals and calm certain inflammatory signals. However, these proposed mechanisms are based largely on test-tube and animal studies, and it is not clear how strongly they apply when a person drinks wheatgrass juice or takes the powder.

Safety & precautions
For most healthy adults, wheatgrass is generally considered safe when taken in normal food-like amounts. Because it is often grown and consumed raw, there is a possible risk of contamination with bacteria or mold, so product quality and proper handling matter.
People with a wheat allergy should be cautious, as reactions are possible. Wheatgrass is harvested before the grain forms, so it usually contains little or no gluten, but cross-contamination can occur—people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity should choose products clearly labeled and tested gluten-free, and check with their provider.
Because safety has not been established, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid wheatgrass unless their doctor approves. Always tell your pharmacist or doctor about any supplements you take, especially if you have a health condition or take medications.
Side effects
Wheatgrass is usually well tolerated. The most common complaints are mild and digestive, such as nausea, upset stomach, bloating, or loss of appetite, especially when first starting. Some people dislike its strong grassy taste, which can trigger gagging.
Headache is also reported by some users. Allergic reactions are possible, particularly in people sensitive to wheat or grasses; signs can include swelling, hives, or trouble breathing. Stop use and seek medical care if you have any signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Wheatgrass: Reported Adverse Effects

Orally, wheatgrass is generally well tolerated.
Most Common Adverse Effects:
Orally: Allergic reactions, anorexia, constipation, nausea.
Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) Immunologic
Wheat can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Due to the prevalence of this allergy in the general population, wheat and wheat products, such as wheatgrass, are classified as major food allergens in the United States.

Dosing
There is no official or standardized dose for wheatgrass. Amounts vary widely between fresh juice, powder, and tablets, so the right amount depends on the specific product.
The safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and start with a small amount to see how your body responds. If you are considering wheatgrass for a specific health concern, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first to make sure it is appropriate for you.
