Based on the available evidence, the overall risk of a clinically significant Dandelion drug interaction appears low for most people. None of the interactions are rated major, and nearly all rest on lab or animal research rather than proven effects in humans.

Interactions deserving the most attention

The best-documented concern is lithium: dandelion may act as a mild diuretic, which can cause lithium levels to rise, so this combination deserves genuine caution. People taking diabetes medications should also be alert for low blood sugar, since dandelion may boost insulin activity, and one person on insulin developed hypoglycemia after starting it. There is a theoretical bleeding concern with blood thinners as well, though this comes only from lab research so far.

What the rest of the list means

The long list of medications mostly reflects theory rather than confirmed harm. Lab research suggests dandelion may affect enzymes the body uses to process many drugs, which flags hundreds of medications at once, yet these effects have not been reported in people. Animal studies also hint it could lower levels of certain antibiotics, but this has not been seen in humans either.

Overview

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a flowering plant in the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is famous for its bright yellow flowers and the puffy white seed heads that children love to blow. While many people see it as a lawn weed, it grows across Europe, Asia, and the Americas and has long been used as both a food and a folk medicine.

Nearly all parts of the plant are used. The young leaves are eaten in salads, the roots are sometimes roasted and brewed like coffee, and the flowers are made into wine or syrup. As a supplement, dandelion comes in teas, capsules, tinctures, and liquid extracts.

Traditionally, people have used dandelion for liver and gallbladder complaints, kidney and urinary concerns, digestion, and as a 'natural diuretic' to reduce water retention.

How it works

Dandelion contains a mix of plant compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, sesquiterpene lactones (which give the bitter taste), inulin (a type of fiber), and potassium.

The bitter compounds are thought to stimulate digestive juices and bile flow, which is the traditional basis for using it as a digestive and liver aid. Its potassium content and certain plant chemicals are the proposed reason for its possible diuretic (water-losing) effect.

It is important to know that most of these mechanisms come from laboratory or animal research. We do not have strong proof that these effects translate into real, reliable benefits in people.

Safety & precautions

Dandelion is widely eaten as a food and is generally considered safe in normal food amounts. Concentrated supplement doses are less studied.

Allergies: Dandelion is in the same plant family as ragweed, marigolds, daisies, and chrysanthemums. People allergic to these plants may also react to dandelion. Contact with the plant can also cause skin rashes in some people.

Who should be cautious: People with gallbladder problems, blocked bile ducts, or kidney disease should talk to a doctor first, since dandelion may affect bile flow and fluid balance. Because it may act as a mild diuretic, use caution if you are already taking water pills or have conditions affected by fluid loss.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough reliable safety information. To be safe, avoid concentrated dandelion supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor approves; eating small amounts in food is less of a concern but still warrants caution.

Side effects

Dandelion is usually well tolerated. When side effects occur, they are typically mild and may include:

Topically, dandelion can cause contact dermatitis and erythema multiforme in sensitive individuals. Dandelion can cause an allergic reaction in individuals sensitive to the Asteraceae/Compositae family. Members of this family include ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies, and many other herbs.

Diabetes Endocrine

In one report, a 56-year-old man with renal impairment developed hyperoxalaemia and peripheral gangrene after ingesting large amounts of dandelion tea (10 to 15 cups daily for 6 months). The adverse effect was attributed to the high oxalate content of dandelion tea (258 mcmol/L) and reduced renal oxalate clearance caused by renal impairment. In another report, a 58-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes who was being treated with insulin developed hypoglycemic symptoms 2 weeks after beginning to eat salads containing dandelion. The hypoglycemic effect was attributed to the potential alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity of dandelion.

Diarrhea Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal symptoms, including stomach discomfort, diarrhea, and heartburn, have been reported following oral use of dandelion. A case of intestinal blockage has been reported for a patient who ingested a large amount of dandelion greens three weeks after undergoing a stomach operation. Also, a case of hemorrhagic cystitis has been reported for a 33-year-old woman who took a specific herbal product (Slim-Kombu, Balestra and Mech, Vicenza, Italy) containing 20 herbal extracts, including dandelion extract. Symptoms resolved after the patient discontinued using the product, and symptoms resumed when the patient began taking the supplement again four months later. While various ingredients in the supplement may have contributed to the symptoms, it is possible that dandelion extract may have contributed to the effect due to its diuretic, laxative, cholagogue, and antirheumatic properties.

Obesity Cardiovascular

In one report, a 39-year-old obese woman developed palpitations and syncope after taking a weight loss supplement containing a combination of dandelion, bladderwrack, and boldo for 3 weeks. The patient was found to have prolonged QT-interval on ECG and frequent episodes of sustained polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. It is not clear whether dandelion, another ingredient, or the combination of ingredients is responsible for this adverse effect. The product was not analyzed to determine the presence of any potential toxic contaminants.
